Canadian Super Visa

The Canadian Super Visa is a multiple-entry visa that is valid for up to 10 years. This visa allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to stay in Canada for up to 5 years per entry without the need to renew their status each time they enter the country. They can live alongside their children and grandchildren during their stay. This visa is also known as a family visa, parent visa, or parental visa in Canada and is different from sponsorship visas and tourist visas.

as of July 4, 2022:

  • Holders of the Super Visa can stay in Canada for up to 5 years each time they enter the country.
  • Individuals who currently hold the Super Visa and are in Canada can apply to extend their stay for more than 2 years.
  • Designate international insurance companies will soon be authorized to provide medical insurance coverage to Super Visa applicants.

In the past, applicants were required to provide medical insurance from only Canadian insurance companies, but under the new law, providing medical insurance from international insurance companies is also permitted. These international insurance companies will be designated by the Minister of Immigration Canada in the near future.

Who is qualified for Parents/Grandparents Super Visa

  • Be the parent, grandparent, or the parent/grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (PR).
  • Have an invitation from your child or grandchild.
  • Be physically healthy and undergo medical tests approved by Canada.
  • Have no criminal record.
  • Have no impediment to entering Canada.
  • Obtain medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company with a minimum validity of 1 year from the date of entry into Canada. This insurance must cover a minimum of $100,000 (purchasing medical insurance from non-Canadian insurance companies is also possible as of July 4, 2022).
  • Be financially stable.
  • Apply from outside Canada.
  • Undergo biometric fingerprinting in Canada.

Eligibility Requirements for Sponsors (Child or Grandchild)

  • Be the child or grandchild of the invitee.
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Be over 18 years old.
  • Have sufficient income to financially support their parents/grandparents during their stay in Canada. The income level must be according to the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) table.
  • Provide a written commitment to financially support their parents/grandparents during their stay.

Other Conditions Considered by Immigration Officers for Super Visa Canada Applications:

  • Your ties to your country.
  • Purpose of the trip.
  • Family status and financial situation.
  • The economic and political stability of the country you are applying from.

Proof of Financial Capability for Super Visa Canada 2024

Your child or grandchild must provide a minimum income to qualify for your visa, known as the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO). LICO is the minimum income level equivalent to the poverty line in urban areas of Canada. If your child or grandchild’s income is less than the amount specified in the LICO table, your visa application will be rejected.

The LICO amount depends on the number of family members and is announced by the Canadian government each year.

Number of Family Members Included in Calculating the LICO Amount To determine the minimum income of the inviting person according to the LICO table, you must consider all family members, including:

  • The host or invitee (child/grandchild)
  • Spouse or fiancé of the child/grandchild (in case of remarriage)
  • Dependent children of the child/grandchild
  • Any person whose financial support has been previously undertaken by your child/grandchild and the agreement is still valid.
  • You as parents or grandparents of your child/grandchild.
  • Your spouse or fiancé (in case of remarriage).

Documents required for father, mother/grandfather, grandmother:

  • Identification documents: such as passport with all travel stamps, translated birth certificate, translated marriage certificate
  • Educational documents if applicable
  • Invitation letter from child or grandchild
  • One 3.5×4.5 photo
  • Employment or retirement documents
  • If employed: translated employment letter from employer, employment contracts, recent months’ insurance history, recent salary slips
  • If self-employed: translated business license
  • If owning a company: translated official newspaper with company establishment and changes advertisements, company articles of association, tax payment list, employee salary payment invoices
  • If retired: translation of retirement decree
  • Receipt of payment for medical insurance expenses for at least one year
  • Documents related to medical tests approved by Canada
  • Translation of a certificate of no criminal record
  • Documents related to your assets such as house deeds, land, shops, etc.
  • Bank letters and account statements (Financial support from parents is not mandatory but it is recommended to provide sufficient bank assurance to demonstrate financial stability and good economic status)

Signed financial commitment for financial support of parents during their stay in Canada

Financial documents demonstrating that the sponsor’s minimum income is according to the Low Income Cut Off (LICO) table or higher

Notice of Assessment (NOA) or T4/T1 for the recent tax year

Employment Insurance Stubs

Employment letter including hiring date and salary received

Pay Stubs

Bank Statements

Other financial documents and assets such as property deeds

Documents demonstrating familial relationship with parents/grandparents, such as birth certificates.

  • Unclear purpose of the trip
  • Lack of sufficient ties of the invitee in their home country
  • Submission of incomplete or incorrect documents
  • Lack of physical health.
